How the Data Is Collected and Calculated

This page explains, once, the rules behind the numbers on every animal page, the planner and the guides.

Source and snapshot

The species list, enclosure types, biomes, continents, conservation status and barrier specs come from the official Planet Zoo 2 Zoopedia overview. Minimum space, shelter, temperature, group size and the neutral and thriving companion lists come from each animal's own Zoopedia page. All 136 species were read on 2026-10-14. Values can change in game updates; the date of the last check is shown on every page.

Space for a group

The Zoopedia lists, per area type (land, aquatic, deep water, flight, climbable), a minimum for the first animal and an extra amount for each additional animal. The total for a group is the first-animal minimum plus the extra amount times the number of additional animals. Animal pages show this total for the largest listed group size. Shelter is listed per animal, so the shelter for a group is the per-animal value times the group size.

Space rank

An animal's space rank compares its first-animal minimum with every other species of the same enclosure type that has a value listed: land for terrestrial habitat animals, flight space for flying habitat animals and deep water for aquarium animals. The percentage is the share of those species that need less.

Compatible species

Each Zoopedia page names neutral and thriving companions, and the two pages of a pair do not always agree. A pair is shown if either page lists it, and counts as thriving if either page lists it as thriving. No pairing crosses habitat and aquarium animals, and no exhibit-only species lists a companion.

Shared temperature and combined barrier

The temperature two or more species accept is the overlap of their ranges. A shared habitat's barrier takes the highest grade and the tallest minimum height of the species in it, must be climb-proof if any of them needs that, and can be a water barrier only if every species allows one.

New in Planet Zoo 2

An animal counts as new when the first Planet Zoo (all DLC included) had neither the same species nor the same subspecies, matched by scientific name against the Planet Zoo fandom wiki list, checked 2026-10-16.

Notes and guides

The short notes at the top of each animal page and the guides are written from these values. Every number in them is one of the values above or a sum, difference or ranking of them; they do not add game mechanics the Zoopedia does not state, such as terrain mix, enrichment or food.
